The theme for this years Conference will be "The Mediaeval Walled Town" which will provide a fascinating insight into this wonderful aspect of out heritage. In fact, Youghal Town Wall encompasses the greatest surviving circuit of mediaeval defensive wall in the country. This will provide an appropriate backdrop to the themes. Throughout the days surrounding the Conference we have put together a programme of events to suit everyone. The venue is the Mall Arts Centre Youghal. The dates for this year's Conference are 24th, 25th and 26th September 2010. We are , currently finalising details and speakers for the Conference but the various themes we will be exploring will, probably, include:
Masonry Town Walls in an Irish context, the Mediaeval street layout and urban services, the architecture of the Norman Parish church, Heraldry - the language of power, Irish Mediaeval Walled Towns, location and significance, the allocation of building plots within the towns,the relationship between the towns and the monastic settlement outisde the walls, the interaction between the subdued Gaelic population and the citizens of the Norman walled town, Everyday Life in the Mediaeval town - cooking, clothing, housing, entertainment etc.
